Overview of ESP

ESP is different from General English (GE) as in GE students develop several linguistic skills (reading, speaking etc.) throughout many years. GE prepares students for a broad diversity of uses and situations - objectives are, thus, very diversified. With ESP, as its name suggests, objectives are more specific, and delimitated by the student's needs.
In many areas, students and professionals are requested to read in different languages. Quite often, the only necessary skill required is reading. ESP is an important tool when focusing on this necessary skill (reading).
The most common ESP courses emphasize reading, and countless reasons can be pointed out for that: professionals demands, reading of academic and scientific papers, access to literature sources (including the Internet), reading of manuals, specific exams for Master's Degrees and PhD's, and so forth.
Technology is also another reason why students seek for ESP courses. Some experts say that about 80% of all of the contents found in the Internet are written in English.
